Florida State football fans could make the same claim Tuesday, as FSU greeted the new year with a sluggish but effective 30-17 victory over Virginia Tech in the Toyota Gator Bowl.
It was a game in which FSU trailed for most of the first half, fell behind in the third quarter and then led by only six points until a touchdown with two minutes to play. It was a game almost without drama until the final minutes.
But it was a victory that allowed FSU to salvage a lackluster season with an 8-4 record and a certain modest rise from its current ranking of 24th in the nation.
It was enough to leave FSU unbeaten in five Gator Bowl appearances and extend FSU's unbeaten streak in New Year's Day bowls to eight straight.
