KANDAHAR, Afghanistan_About 200 U.S. Marines searched a compound in Helmand province Tuesday for information left behind by al-Qaida and the Taliban, while Afghan military officials said their forces were closing in on an area where Mullah Mohammad Omar might be hiding.
Anti-Taliban Afghan forces, possibly accompanied by U.S. Special Operations troops, were concentrating on the Baghran region of Helmand province, 100 miles northwest of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, according to Afghan foreign and defense ministry officials. Omar, the Taliban leader, could be hiding there with a force of as many as 1,500 to 2,000 Taliban loyalists.
