FORT WAYNE _ Tyrone Willingham claims he used to sneak out of church early to catch Notre Dame football highlights, which might be an exaggeration, but at least he didn't put it on his resume.
Willingham's background is as impeccable and unblemished as George O'Leary's was hazy and stained, and the Fighting Irish could afford nothing less the second time around in their coaching search.
In appearance, demeanor and words, Willingham elicits precision and control. His integrity is unquestioned, his reputation clean. He even looked good in Irish blue with subtle hints of green and gold after years of sporting Stanford cardinal red. He makes it easy to believe that what you see is what you get, which is a high priority in South Bend these days.
