SEATTLE _ Nearly two dozen Border Patrol agents were pulled from the U.S.-Canadian border in Washington before the holidays despite protests by regional immigration officials and worries that terrorists entering through Canada could target New Year's celebrations.

The agents, who had been temporarily assigned in October to serve as inspectors at Washington ports of entry, were withdrawn by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) on the weekend before Christmas.

The timing of the move was worrisome, said Charla Neuman, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash. Larsen's office and the INS' Seattle District office opposed the move.
