WASHINGTON _ Guess which Minnesota politician will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame today?
Hint: He didn't use a feather boa.
It's U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., who was a champion wrestler during his high school and college days and has remained a fan of the amateur sport. At a ceremony Saturday in Oklahoma, Wellstone will receive the hall's award as an Outstanding American.
"An Outstanding American is a person who has wrestled at some time in their life and then went on to become highly successful or famous in their chosen field of endeavor," said Tony Linville, executive director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. "It could be in government, like he is, or it could be in education or business, where they used the disciplines of wrestling to reach the top of their chosen profession."
Wellstone was traveling to Oklahoma and wasn't available Friday to reminisce about his wrestling career. But according to his staff, he was undefeated in high school wresting and a conference champion at the University of North Carolina.
