ARLINGTON, Texas _ They haven't seen one another since spring training, but Doug Mientkiewicz has a pretty good idea what he will hear from his old high school buddy Alex Rodriguez when the two meet.
"In front of other people, it'll be, `Hi, how're you doing, man?' " said Mientkiewicz, the Twins' rising-star first baseman. "Away from everybody: `It's about time.' "
As the Twins play in their first series of the season against the Texas Rangers, Mientkiewicz never has felt closer to Rodriguez as a major leaguer. Never appreciated him more.
And never wanted to emulate him less.
"He's been marquee and a marked man since he was 16 and handled it above and beyond anyone in a sporting realm," Mientkiewicz said. "If you look at what he's done and how young he is, I can only think of two other guys like that: Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods."
As rarefied as the air is at Rodriguez's level, Mientkiewicz has spent two months catching his first whiff of it.
Not exactly $252 million worth, but enough to confirm what he always suspected.
