With Broadway set to bestow the Tony awards Sunday _ its highest honors _ the theater world is still reveling in the rapturous reception rolled out for "The Producers," film director Mel Brooks' musical adaptation of his 1968 satire of Broadway, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
Analysts said the show has a lock on best musical, best book and score, best director for Susan Stroman and, barring a major upset, best actor for Lane in the showy role of the flamboyant Max Bialystock. This would be a second Tony for Lane, who also won for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." With its 15 nominations, "The Producers" could break the old record of 10 wins held by the classic "Hello Dolly!"
