PHILADELPHIA _ Welcome to the beach.
And now, sit down and be quiet. Without your dog, or any other pet.
Don't even think about bringing a ball to play with _ there will be no ball playing of any kind. Or Frisbee throwing.
And put away that cooler. No picnics or "intoxicating liquids." Don't set foot on the beach after 10 p.m. or before 6 a.m. Don't walk on the seawall or any of the bulkheads. Don't blare your radio or plan on a beach party. Or a bonfire. And change your clothes at home, please!
Oh, and make sure you have purchased your beach badge _ to show that you have shelled out the requisite dollars simply to be on the beach.
Because at the Jersey Shore _ unlike beaches in places such as North Carolina and Florida _ the privilege of paying to spend a day at the beach comes with a laundry list of rules and regulations. You've seen them, right? Right there in the fine print under the giant NO that heads the ubiquitous signs at beach entrances.
In even smaller print, you may find the penalty should you flout them. It's no small price: Avalon, for instance, will fine you up to $2,000, while in Cape May you could pay $500 and spend up to 90 days in jail.
