May 31--NEW LIFE STIRS AT PASSAGES: Restoration of the 112-year-old structure at 708 Broadway is now practically complete. Only some finishing interior touches remain on the commercial condominium now known as the Passages Building.
Oh, yeah, and the key matter of finding tenants for the spaces not being used by the three owner-occupants.
This $2 million project has created not only a gorgeous four-floor building dripping with character but also a historic monument of sorts to the site's diverse uses over the years. Though no traces of the former Abbott Building's original role as a post office were unearthed during construction, vestiges of its days as a theater, hotel, car dealership and auto parts warehouse are now visible elements of the restored property.
