BETHESDA, MD. -- Supplementation with dehydroepiandrosterone improved body composition and bone mineral density in older adults, Wendy Kohrt, Ph.D., said at a conference on sports nutrition supplements sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
In a preliminary, open-label trial, daily administration of 50 mg of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) for 3 months to 30 men and women aged 40-70 years resulted in a significant increase in lean body mass and a significant decrease in fat mass. Most of the fat loss occurred on the trunk (Chin. Endocrinol. 53[5]:56168, 2000).
