SAN ANTONIO -- Factors that put a woman at increased risk of breast cancer are not the same as those that put breast cancer patients at risk for getting an aggressive form of the disease, Dr. Carmela C. Veneroso reported.
It's well established, for example, that early age at first pregnancy is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Yet among a cohort of 215 women with breast cancer, those who had their first child before age 20 were more than threefold more likely to have an aggressive tumor, Dr. Veneroso said at the annual breast cancer symposium, which was sponsored by the San Antonio Cancer Institute.
Fifty-four percent of women in this study had aggressive breast cancer as defined by tumor grade 3 or 4.
