CHICAGO -- Chronic treatment with valacyclovir was more effective than episodic treatment for minimizing recurrences of genital herpes in a controlled study of 80 patients.
"Episodic treatment is not a great idea [for managing recurrent infections] unless a patient has few recurrences," Dr. Kenneth H. Fife said while presenting a poster at the annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology So far, there does not seem to be a substantial danger of selecting for drug-resistant strains of herpes virus with chronic valacyclovir use, said Dr. Fife, professor of medicine at Indiana University Indianapolis.
