Lack of access to metabolic clinics and rigid dietary restrictions were obstacles to maintaining safe blood phenylalanine levels in women with phenylketonuria who became pregnant, study results suggest.
Women with PKU must be especially vigilant about their diets while pregnant to avoid mental retardation and microcephaly in their babies and to increase their chances of delivering a healthy infant.
The survey, which was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, included 24 women with PKU who were pregnant between 1998 and 2000.
