Maternal cannabis use may significantly reduce birth weight but is not associated with perinatal mortality, said Dr. David M. Fergusson of Christchurch (New Zealand) Hospital, and his associates.
Prior studies on the effects of prenatal cannabis exposure on a fetus or newborn are inconsistent, and several confounding factors must be accounted for, the investigators said.
After adjustment for confounding variables, including maternal education and ethnicity, parity, and other drug use, women who used cannabis at least weekly before and during pregnancy had babies who were an average of 101.9 g lighter than those whose mothers didn't use cannabis. After adjusting for gestational age, babies of cannabis users still weighed 84.2 g less, a statistically significant difference.
