What's the history of the Kentucky Derby?
The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States.
Horses have been racing in Louisville since 1783, but the track that came to be known as Churchill Downs, where the Derby is run, opened in 1875.
Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark toured tracks in England and brought back the idea of three major prize, or stakes, races for the first meet at Churchill Downs.
The track officially opened May 17, 1875, with four races. The winner of the feature race, the first Kentucky Derby, was Aristides, a horse owned by H.P. McGrath. Aristides was trained by Ansel Williamson and ridden by Oliver Lewis. Lewis and Williamson were both African-American.
