LOUISVILLE, Ky. _ Joe Orseno stepped away from Barn 41 at Churchill Downs to get a better look at the Great Balloon Race Sunday morning.
"You don't want to run that race in New York," he said. "Somebody'd be on a roof. . . . They'd have a slingshot or a pellet gun or something."
In Thunder Blitz, Orseno has brought a slingshot to the 127th Kentucky Derby. The heavy artillery from Stronach Stable_Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old champion Macho Uno_is in Ocala, Fla., concluding a 60-day leave of absence to finish a growth spurt.
Orseno sensed that Macho Uno wasn't perfect as he prepared for his 3-year-old campaign. Extensive tests eventually revealed immaturity in the colt's bone growth. The layoff to cope with bone remodeling syndrome will allow him to run in big races the second half of the year.
"Nine and a half trainers out of 10 would've trained him on medication,"Orseno said. "If we'd gone on with him, we'd probably have broken him down. We knew it wasn't the right thing, so we stopped. It was a minor setback, not career ending."
Macho Uno has resumed training with the goal of making the Travers Stakes in August. The Breeders' Cup Classic awaits this fall at Belmont Park.
"Maybe we could've trained him through it, and he would've been the best 3-year-old there ever was," Orseno said. "Maybe now he'll be the best 4-year-old there ever was."
