FLORENCE, Colo. _ It took less than seven days for William Vance Turner to realize that life inside the U.S. Federal Penitentiary at Florence was not for the weak.

"I got a beating worse than Rodney King," Turner said of alleged abuse by prison guards. "There was no one to turn to. All the staff believed the officers."

But now the guards are the ones looking for help after a two-year federal probe into suspected civil rights abuses at the prison. Federal investigators say seven guards formed a gang known as The Cowboys and abused prisoners for no reason.

A federal indictment, released last year, alleges the guards beat inmates, kneed them in the kidneys, squeezed their testicles and placed feces and urine in their food.

The indictment says the guards falsified prison reports and blamed inmates for starting fights. The guards even injured themselves, prosecutors say, to justify the beatings.

"This is the biggest indictment of Bureau of Prisons employees in recent history, if not ever," said Jeff Dorschner, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver.

The indictment charges guards Mike Lavallee, Rod Schultz, Ken Shatto, David Pruyne, Robert Verbickas, Brent Gall and James Bond with inmate abuse.
