It's been 24 years since they moved to upstate New York from Martinez, Calif., but brothers Jeff and Stan Van Gundy still can rattle off their childhood address and phone number.

The Van Gundys lived at 612 Blue Ridge Dr., in the Virginia Hills section of this tight-knit small town, when the area code was 415.

It was from 1967 to 1977, while kids in Martinez, that these sons of a high school and college basketball coach fell in love with their father's sport and profession.

It was while kids in Martinez that the Van Gundy brothers began what turned out to be a truth-is-stranger-than-fiction journey all the way to the NBA.

At 39, Jeff is already in his sixth season as coach of the New York Knicks. He led the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1999 and has his team in the playoffs for the sixth consecutive time.

Older brother Stan, 41, is in his fourth season as the Miami Heat's assistant head coach and sixth season overall with the team. He is coach Pat Riley's top lieutenant on a Heat team whose sixth consecutive playoff run ended with Friday's loss to Charlotte, which swept the first-round series.
