KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Herschel Golub doesn't need to advertise for his horseback riding lessons.
The Stilwell, Kan., resident has been giving them for so long that people just know to call him. He taught Saundra Roche in the 1970s. Now her 9-year-old daughter, Stephanie, rides with him.
Roche recommended him to her friend Kim Mawhiney. Her daughter, Blair, 11, is also one of Golub's students.
"He's so good with the kids," Mawhiney said. "He's so interested in them. It's not competitive at all. It's just sharing a love of the horses."
Golub's students love him, said Jane Golub, his wife.
Former students send graduation announcements and wedding invitations. He's been nominated twice for Kindest Kansas Citian. He has a bulletin board covered with pictures and letters from current and former students.
"He's really humble about it," she said. "But he really is a very kind and giving person. The kids always remember him."
