MIAMI _ Biscayne National Park has announced plans to close portions of its outer islands to humans to protect nesting wildlife. From May 1 to Aug. 15, beaches on the north and south sides of Boca Chita Key and all of Ragged Key 1 and Soldier Key will be closed to visitors. Violators face $75 fines.
Park biologist Brian Lockwood said loggerhead and hawksbill sea turtles and various species of shore birds nest on Boca Chita's beaches. Those areas will be closed off with snow fences and warning signs, he said. Killdeer, a plover-like bird, nests in the island's open, grassy areas. A 10-foot by 10-foot area around the nest will be barricaded.
"We want to see if we can lure some birds back that nest there historically," Lockwood said. "If you scare the bird off, the egg will be fried in 10 minutes."
No one will be allowed to make landfall on Ragged Key 1 _ the northernmost of the five Raggeds _ or on Soldier Key. Lockwood said ...
