If the vocal tracks were backed up by a period-instrument group, Hanssler could pass this recording off as "early music," so stylish is the singing. While still a student, Fritz Wunderlich had fallen in with a group of musicologists who were exploring repertoire before Bach and Handel. As a result, he was cast in the role of Apollo on the pioneering 1955 recording of Monteverdi's Orfeo, led by August Wenzinger. At the same time, the Stuttgart radio was nurturing a Baroque ensemble and, while engaged to sing small roles at the opera, the young tenor became a regular in these broadcast presentations.
