Hugo Wolf is not to be approached by the faint-hearted, from either side of the footlights (or the microphone), and Barbara Hendricks would seem the ideal singer to work without a net. She is fearless and earnest in her musical approach and is able to come at the style both from the context of earlier and later repertoire. Unfortunately, on this disc of Morike and Goethe settings she seems to be constantly wrestling with the music, battling the vocal line, even in the lighter songs.
