Introducing myself to this new CD while driving on the West Side Highway might have been a mistake, but luckily the eye-popping tempo of the opening aria, Rinaldo's "Venti, turbini," alerted me to pull over immediately. Those familiar with Ewa Podles's discs of Rossini already know of the impressive three-octave range (and her savvy capacity to maximize the impact of its extremes), her very particular colors -- hugely resonant and heroic low notes, smoky middle, brilliant top -- and an astonishing flexibility, but this recital reveals her dazzlingly outrageous and personalized approach to Handel, and it is stunning.
The first two tracks alone demonstrate mastery of every vocal, theatrical and musical technique demanded by this repertoire. Our first hint of artistic daring is the unexpected leap to a massive low A in "Venti, turbini," just before the return of the first section. The da capo brings leaps, ...
