Niccolo Piccinni (1728-1800) was among the most celebrated composers of his day, writing more than one hundred works in a variety of genres for the opera stage. Having established his career in Italy by the time he reached his forties, he moved with his entire family to Paris and became Gluck's greatest rival there. There after Piccinni wrote almost exclusively in the serious-opera style, but earlier he had written many comic operas, both full opere buffe and shorter comic intermezzi. These latter generally served as entr'actes to plays. Le Donne Vendicate, written in 1763 to a libretto adapted from Goldoni, is one of these shorter works.
