Any new recording of Ariodante arrives with a heavy burden to justify its existence, since Archiv's 1997 release (457 271-2), with Anne Sofie von Otter and Marc Minkowski, is near-perfect. It's unfair to ask any singer to compete with von Otter's "Scherza infida," one of the finest pieces of vocalism this artist has ever offered. Von Otter sings at a hush, drawing out the vocal line, never losing momentum or suspense, turning this aria into a tender, painful reverie. At this point in her career, Ann Murray is simply unable to rival that kind of singing, not to mention that of Janet Baker, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson or David Daniels on other recordings.
