1. LAUREN FLANIGAN, Queen Elizabeth I in NYCO's Roberto Devereux last fall, returns to Donizetti and Good Queen Bess on May 13, in Opera Orchestra of New York's Maria Stuarda at Carnegie Hall. Other spring engagements for Flanigan include Canteloube's Les Chants d'Auvergne with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at the PAC at SUNY Purchase (May 5) and Carnegie Hall (May 8), as well as Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony (June 6, 7, 10). Flanigan's Abigaille heats up Babylon this summer in Cincinnati Opera's Nabucco (July 19, 21).
2. JASON ROBERT BROWN, Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist of 1998's Parade, is in residence at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie, Illinois, for the world-premiere run of his new musical, The Last Five Years. An intimate romantic duet, The Last Five Years began rehearsals in early spring at Lincoln Center Theatre, which originally commissioned the piece. THE METROPOLITAN OPERA begins its monthlong TOUR OF JAPAN on May 19 in Otsu City, with JAMES LEVINE pacing Placido Domingo and Olga Borodina in Samson et Dalila. The company will present a total of fifteen fully-staged opera performances in Otsu City, Nagoya, Yokohama and Tokyo, as well as two MET Orchestra concerts in Tokyo. Levine also conducts Rigoletto (Swenson, Mishura/ White; Vargas, Pons, Lloyd) and concerts of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder (Gruber; Heppner) and the Verdi ...
