FONTANA, Calif. _ One lap was all Bobby Hamilton Jr. needed Friday.

Each NASCAR Grand National driver had two laps to qualify for Saturday's Auto Club 300 at California Speedway (3:30 p.m., Fox), but Hamilton insisted all he needed was one.

He turned his lap into his first series pole with a lap at 179.198 mph. Tony Raines was second, followed by rookie and series points leader Greg Biffle.

"I figured (Biffle) would have the best shot at the pole and everybody was talking about using one or two laps and I just said, `I've been practicing one (lap) the whole time we've been here. So just give me one that will take me all the way up front,'" Hamilton …
