Manny Legace's success is paying off.
Bonus clauses will bolster the Red Wings goalie's relatively humble base salary of $525,000, according to a person familiar with the contract.
His first five wins are worth $5,000 each, six through 20 $15,000 each, 21 and above $30,000 each. Legace took a 22-5-5 record into Sunday night's game against Washington, giving him an extra $310,000.
Legace also receives bonuses relating to his goals-against average and save percentage. The source didn't provide specifics. Legace had healthy numbers entering Sunday night: a 2.14 goals-against average and .917 save percentage.
No one expected Legace to reach the marks he has in his first full NHL season. When he played his 25th game, a clause guaranteed his NHL salary this season and next, and he said that had been his goal entering the season.
But the Wings are happy to pay for Legace's play, which has bailed them out on several occasions. It's still somewhat of a bargain.
