ERIE, Pa. _ Outfielder Bobby Higginson agreed Sunday to a four-year, $35.4-million contract extension with the Detroit Tigers.
"It's great _ there's not much more I could ask for," Higginson said Sunday before the exhibition finale against Double-A Erie. "I got three years of no-trade, and that's what I wanted. I gave up some on the money end, but when you're talking that kind of dollars, the difference gets to be kind of irrelevant at that point."
Higginson had been seeking a four-year deal for about $40 million; the Tigers were offering about $34 million with only a limited no-trade clause.
Under the compromise, the Tigers increased their dollar offer and gave Higginson the blanket no-trade clause he wanted for the next three years _ the last year of his existing contract and the first two years of the extension. In the last two years of the deal, Higginson has a limited no-trade clause in which he can exclude 12 teams.
General manager Randy Smith said he was confident the sides could get the contract done before the season, the deadline Higginson imposed to complete negotiations. Higginson had said if the deal wasn't done by then, he would play out the last season of his contract and become a free agent.
"I was always optimistic it would get done," Smith said. "It made too much sense not to.
