U.S. women shoot for first gold at worlds.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
Considering their history, it's hard to believe.
Three years ago, on the grandest stage of them all, the U.S. women's hockey team won the inaugural gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics, defeating Canada in the championship game.
It can't get much better than that, right?
Think again.
Team USA was superb at the Olympics, but on a different stage _ the IIHF Women's World Championships _ the U.S. women have yet to be as good as gold.
In the six world championships that have been held since 1990, Canada has won all of them. And which country has been the runners-up in every final?
The United States.
