CHICAGO _ Staggering into the last eight days of the season the Chicago Blackhawks had Edmonton reeling Sunday afternoon in the United Center.
They had two-goal leads in both the first and second periods.
Then the Hawks faltered. Edmonton hit them with third-period goals by Janne Niinimaa and Ryan Smyth, and they settled for a 3-3 overtime draw that ended their losing streak at six games (0-5-1).
"We played a pretty good game," said Hawks goaltender Jocelyn Thibault. "We had them on the ropes after two periods, but they fought really hard at the start of the third.
"They're fighting to get as high a position as they can get in the playoffs."
Thibault faced only three shots in the second period but was hit with a 15-shot barrage in the third and had to make game-saving stops on short-range shots by Eric Brewer and Todd Marchant in overtime.
But the Hawks' biggest star was Eric Daze, who scored their first and third goals. The second of his goals was a shorthanded shot set up by Steve Sullivan and increased his season total to a career-high 32. His previous high was 31 in 1997-98.
