FORT WORTH, Texas _ Thirteen drivers were involved in incidents that sidelined them altogether or cost them laps during the Harrah's 500. Despite the carnage and hurt feelings, there were no injuries.
The wrecking began early, when Michael Waltrip, Ron Hornaday, Jimmy Spencer and Kurt Busch got together in Turn 4 on the fourth lap. Thirty laps later, Jerry Nadeau and Robert Pressley got together on the backstretch.
Four drivers were involved in a backstretch incident at lap 207. Casey Atwood and Joe Nemechek got together in Turn 2, then Ward Burton spun when everyone ahead of them slowed. Moments later, Andy Houston wrecked on the backstretch.
Spencer spun and wrecked in Turn 4 at lap 266, Matt Kenseth wrecked in Turn 2 at 277, then Sterling Marlin wrecked in Turn 4 at lap 280. Elliott Sadler brought out the last caution the one that helped Dale Jarrett win the race when he brushed the Turn 2 wall at lap 313.
QUOTE, UNQUOTE. This from Steve Park, a runnerup to Jarrett this spring at Darlington and here Sunday: "The back of that 88 car is getting pretty familiar and I'm not really liking it too much."
GOING GREEN. Reigning Busch Series champion Jeff Green will do seven Winston Cup races this year in an AOL-backed No. 30 Chevrolet for owner Richard Childress. He'll do California later this month, then Dover in June, Chicago in July, Indianapolis and Bristol in August, Richmond in September and Charlotte in October.
The deal originally was planned for Kevin Harvick as a prelude to his 2002 Rookie of the Year season. But everything changed when Dale Earnhardt died in February and Harvick inherited his Goodwrench-backed ride. Since the AOL Backing was already in place, Childress decided to move forward with Green.
