Some 1,801 ambulatory but frail elderly individuals (1,409 women and 392 men; mean age, 82 years) were randomly assigned, in a 1:2 ratio, either to a group that wore a hip protector or to a control group. The hip protector (KPH Hip Protector, Respecta, Helsinki, Finland) was a convex device, with its deepest portion over the greater trochanter.
