1. JAMES LEVINE gave a January master class as part of the Marilyn Horne Foundation's The Song Continues ... 2001, an annual mini-festival presented in association with the Juilliard School. This month, Levine conducts Parsifal, Nabucco, Lulu and Ariadne auf Naxos at the Met, then leads the MET Orchestra in Verdi's Requiem at Carnegie Hall. He travels to Japan with the company in May, for performances of Rigoletto, Samson et Dalila, the Verdi Requiem and Schoenberg's Gurrelieder.
2. Arts philanthropist ALBERTO VILAR and conductor LORIN MAAZEL, music director designate of the New York Philharmonic, announced at a Carnegie Hall press event the launching of the MAAZEL/VILAR CONDUCTORS' COMPETITION, an international event designed to identify and develop young conducting talent. Six regional rounds, scheduled to begin next fall, will culminate in a final competition at Carnegie Hall in September 2002. Applications, open to conductors born on or after January 1, 1966, will be accepted until June 1, 2001. Complete instructions are available on the competition's website (www.maazel-vilar.org).
This month, JULIUS RUDEL paces two twentieth-century classics at two New York City conservatories. He leads The Rape of Lucretia at Manhattan School of Music (April 18, 20, 22); three days later, he conducts The Dialogues of the Carmelites at Juilliard Opera Center (April 25, 27, 29).
