The specialists at Malibran-Music have raided the vault to present a potpourri of American sopranos and mezzos, from the little-known Lucille Marcel to the "diva di tutte dive," Rosa Ponselle, allowing one to reflect on the careers of our home-grown singers and how they stacked up on the international scene.
Besides the delicious repertoire one never hears anymore except on historical discs -- arias from La Juive, anything by Meyerbeer, and Tosti sung by someone who is not Tenor one, two or three -- I love the unabashed personalization of the material, equally rare nowadays. Ritards and fermatas surface where one least expects them, extra bars of introduction or interlude accommodate the breath, and theatrical and effective diminuendos abound.
One of the earliest representations is of contralto Louise Homer, successful and beloved work-horse of the Metropolitan for nearly thirty years, with her showpiece, "O, toi qui m'abandonne" ...
