Just in time for the cruelest month comes this set of plaintive English songs, performed by countertenor Daniel Taylor and lutenist Sylvain Bergeron and divided almost equally between vocal and instrumental music.
As a contrast to the recent spate of bravura countertenor recordings, these largely somber laments of a lover in extremis focus on a carefully nuanced delivery of the texts. Taylor's sweet tone, excellent diction, admirable control and pinpoint intonation are impressive throughout, and he successfully avoids the hooty sound so often associated with songs of this period.
