This album introduced me to Hyperion's series of Vivaldi's sacred music, an ongoing project featuring Robert King and the King's Consort at a rate of one album per year. But this first taste won't be my last. This is richly rewarding music, wonderfully performed.
The majority of Vivaldi's sacred vocal music was written for women; in choral works, deeper-voiced singers were assigned not only "alto" or "contralto" parts but also "tenor" and "baritone." Hard to understand how they pulled off such a stunt, at least until you hear contralto Nathalie Stutzmann's dark, powerful sound. Her real showcase is the Nisi Dominus at the end of the album, but "In memoria aeterna," a trio within Beatus Vir, performed with sister contraltos Hilary Summers and Alexandra Gibson, achieves a mournful -- and tonal -- profundity that's ...
