No one will mistake Camille Saint-Saens's early, one-act comic opera La Princesse Jaune for a masterwork, but it is charming, melodious, often sumptuously orchestrated, and, given its decidedly thin plot, surprisingly absorbing. Written for tenor and soprano (plus an offstage female chorus that sings for about forty seconds), the story follows the path of the young painter Kornelis as he learns to appreciate and return the affection of Lena, who loves him, instead of fantasizing about the beautiful Japanese girl in the portrait on his wall. Carlo Allemano has something of the young Domingo in the weight of his ringing tenor, and he displays considerable sensitivity to the shape of Saint-Saens's attractive melodies.
