This CD of Janet Baker in live performances, in her prime, is a must for any fan of the mezzo. Drawn from two recitals she gave at Benjamin Britten's Aldeburgh Festival in 1968 and 1970, plus a BBC Radio 3 lieder recital in 1968, the CD is a wonderful example of Baker at her vocal and interpretive best, ably partnered by pianists John Constable, Geoffrey Parsons and Paul Hamburger.
Haydn's cantata Arianna a Naxos immediately sets the tone for the disc. In total command, Baker underscores every word of the text, carefully shading the shifting emotions and never letting so much as an eighth-note slip past without its requisite coloring. Just the way she sings her lover's name, "Teseo!," halfway through the first aria will make fans swoon -- the longing, the anticipation, the love experienced through the veil of rejection are all there.
For some listeners the highlight of the disc will be Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben. Baker ...
