MILWAUKEE--In what they say is a first for the electric utility industry, Wisconsin Electric (WE) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have filed a joint proposal with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designed to improve air quality, maintain electric reliability, and better manage the costs of air quality improvements. This new environmental commitment will take a comprehensive approach to reduce overall emissions from WE power plants, the utility says.
The joint proposal was filed under the EPA's Project XL Program, which stands for "eXcellence and Leadership." Created in 1995, Project XL is a pilot program that seeks innovative ways to achieve superior environmental performance. If the proposal is approved, the EPA will make the regulatory and policy changes necessary to implement the program.
