In the tense moments just after the earthquake, the world's richest man was just another face in a nervous crowd at the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle, where he was pitching new software at an education-technology conference.
"He looked scared just like we did," said Stan Friesen, a Fresno, Calif., technician.
