SEATTLE _ When the Earth starts rumbling and you're beneath 43 stories of concrete high-rise, it doesn't matter how rich or famous you are.
Ask Bill Gates.
In the tense moments just after the earthquake, the world's richest man was just another face in a nervous crowd at the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle, where he was pitching new software at an education-technology conference.
"He looked scared just like we did," said Stan Friesen, a Fresno, Calif., technician.
When the earthquake began, Gates was on a stage in the Westin's Grand Ballroom demonstrating Microsoft's forthcoming Windows XP operating system. Shaking started just as his assistant, Mike Coleman, plugged a digital camera into the laptop they were using.
