If the Cinderella story were rewritten for the 21st century, it might go this way: The princess, a modern girl from the Midwest, would get the prince, but she'd continue to work after the wedding.
In this particular tale, the prince would also do his bit to increase the family fortune. For his efforts, he would be crowned a king of Wall Street.
And so it happened. They were a dazzling pair, the swells of society, backing benefits, throwing lavish parties, traveling in private airplanes, swirling through the `80s in a cloud of privilege and fast-flowing money.
Then the fairy tale took a nasty turn. The money party ended. The heir apparent (from a previous prince-marriage) died.
The turn became a spiral. The princess had a miscarriage. She lost her business.
The descent was out of control. The princess and prince divorced. She got the country palace. It burned to the ground, taking with it every possession she held dear.
And that is what happened in the fairy tale life of Carolyne Roehm.
