Q. Does the term "Blue Dog Democrat" have any relationship to artist Rodrigue's blue dog?
A. In a word, no.
I'm not sure if you're kidding, but since they're both lesser known topics and I need to fill some space, here goes.
The "Blue Dog" coalition was formed by conservative and moderate Democrats in the 104th Congress. According to the group's Web site _
http://www.house.gov/john/bluedog/
_ it takes its name from the South's longtime description of a party loyalist as someone "who would vote for a yellow dog if it were on the ballot as a Democrat." The representatives felt that their views had been "choked blue" by the liberals in their party, the Web site explains.
The site features a blue dog in a red circle as the coalition's logo, but it is not the work of Cajun artist George Rodrigue. If you're not familiar with Rodrigue's work, plan a trip to one of his galleries in New Orleans, Carmel, Calif., Munich or Tokyo, or check out his Web site at
