AKRON, Ohio _ No more cheeseburgers in paradise for Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia.
The 20-year-old left-hander who was the Indians' No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft (20th overall) made a commitment during the off-season that he would get in better shape.
Sabathia (6-foot-7, 235 pounds) wasn't overweight or out of shape last year when he went 3-2 with a 3.54 ERA at Class-A Kinston and 3-7 with a 3.59 ERA at Double A Akron and led all Indians' minor-leaguers with 159 strikeouts in 146 innings. He just wanted to shed a few pounds, and he did.
Now, Sabathia, the Indians' No. 1 prospect whose fastball has been clocked in the high-90's, is a lean, mean flame-throwing machine.
"C.C. made a conscientious effort to be focused on what he ate during the off-season, and he did a nice job, nutritionally," Indians director of player development Neal Huntington said. "He made a long-term commitment to improve his overall body condition.
"He also made a commitment to come back to Cleveland early, and it shows. He's probably in the best shape of his life, and as a result, he's put himself in a situation to come here and compete to make the (major-league) club."
What was Sabathia's dietary secret?
