SAN JOSE_They won't head into the All-Star break with a seven-point lead in the Pacific Division. They couldn't keep the Dallas Stars reeling.

And now, they probably won't have their captain, at least not for a while.

Other than that, the Sharks' final test before the break went swimmingly.

The Sharks (29-15-8-0, 66 points) lost to the Stars, 4-2, at San Jose Arena on Thursday, a result that reduced their lead in the Pacific Divison to three points over the Stars (29-18-4-1, 63 points).

That was bad enough.

Worse was what happened with five seconds left in the opening period.

Sharks captain Owen Nolan hit Dallas forward Grant Marshall with a vicious elbow to the jaw, a blow delivered with such force that it caused Marshall to land on the back of his head.
