CHICAGO _ A solid rebounding performance earned Loyola an upset 66-54 victory over Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at the Gentile Center.
The Ramblers had a 55-31 rebounding advantage over Detroit, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference leader in rebounding margin. Loyola's 23 offensive boards equaled their opponents' defensive rebounds.
A new starting lineup played a major role as the Ramblers (7-14, 2-6) snapped a three-game losing streak. Regulars Schin Kerr and David Bailey were joined by freshman guard Louis Smith, junior forward Jonathon Freeman and freshman center Hubert Radke, all making their first collegiate starts.
Coach Larry Farmer liked the potential he saw from the unit in a 71-57 loss Monday night at Butler:
"The end of the first half at Butler, the group that started this game was in. They played inspired defense and got us right back in it."
Freeman provided a catalyst for Loyola against Detroit. He scored a career-high 14 points, and four of his seven rebounds came on the offensive end.
