Shopping for moldings? Know terms.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
Chair rails, crown molding and other types of trim are great ways to add character to a room.
It helps to know what you're talking about before you go shopping for moldings. Here are some definitions supplied by the Hardwood Information Center, a service of the Hardwood Manufacturers Association in Pittsburgh:
Baseboard: A trim board that is placed along the floor to hide flaws and add a decorative accent.
Base block: The squared block that terminates a molded baseboard at a doorway. It's also called a plinth block.
Base cap: A profiled molding that rests on top of a baseboard.
Chair rail: A strip of molding applied horizontally on a wall as protection against chair backs or as a design element.
Crown molding: The decorative molding that conceals the joint between the wall and ceiling.
