MIAMI _ James Jones said he was in a zone against Seton Hall on Thursday. He could have said the same about the rest of his teammates.
The University of Miami men's basketball team jumped on the No. 22 Pirates early en route to a much-needed 72-66 win in front of 3,125 at Miami Arena.
And what of Seton Hall freshman sensation Eddie Griffin, the toast of the Pirates? Well, he was nowhere near the same zone as Jones. The nation's leader in rebounds (12.5) and blocks (5.1) grabbed seven boards, had zero blocks and scored 12 points in the nationally televised game.
Meanwhile, Jones scored a career-high 21 points, tying a career-high with five 3-pointers, and center Dwayne Wimbley tied a career-high with 12 points and set a career-high with five blocks.
"I felt everything I put up would go in," Jones said. "I was in that zone a shooter goes in."
The Hurricanes (11-9, 3-6 Big East) put on an inspired performance after a lackluster showing in an 80-70 loss to Providence on Sunday that prompted coach Perry Clark to call his team's effort "disappointing."
UM has crawled out of the cellar of the league's East Division, just ahead of Connecticut (2-5) and Virginia Tech (2-6).
