Nelly Miricioiu, a Romanian-born soprano of some renown in the bel canto repertory, built her earlier career on Verdi and verismo. After starting out in the mid-1970s, she appeared in San Francisco, San Diego and Toronto, but she is best known for her later work in Europe and especially in London, where Opera Rara has recorded a number of her interpretations. The present Rossini Gala album is of interest equally for its unusual program and for the soprano's interpretations, informed with temperament and commitment.
Though Miricioiu's technique and stylistic address are certainly well founded, it's her personality that brings these florid roles to life, and she's unafraid of risk. Not all the passagework in the cabaletta from Zelmira is square on the mark, and the same goes for the opening stanzas of the Semiramide scene, but she knows how to ...
