PHOENIX _ The San Jose Sharks' late-game prowess has been well-documented this season, and if they need any testimonials, the Phoenix Coyotes would make expert witnesses.
The Sharks have played the Coyotes three times this season. In the first meeting, the Sharks' Brad Stuart scored late in the third period for a 2-1 victory. In the second meeting, the Sharks' Gary Suter scored early in overtime for a 2-1 victory.
In the third meeting Monday, Tony Granato and Vincent Damphousse scored the go-ahead and winning goals, respectively, in the third period to help the Sharks post a 3-2 victory.
"These are two really evenly-matched teams," Sharks Coach Darryl Sutter said. "We could've lost a low-scoring game tonight and still been satisfied with your game."
With the win, the Sharks opened an eight-point gap between themselves and the Coyotes in the Pacific Division. Of equal importance, after producing a dud Saturday in a 6-3 home loss against Vancouver, the Sharks responded with a focused effort to claim their second victory in the past six games (2-3-1).
Goalie Evgeni Nabokov, rebounding from a career-worst performance of six goals against Saturday, recorded 22 saves as he allowed two or fewer goals for the 24th time in 31 starts.
This was the 14th time this season that the Sharks have scored the winning goal in the third period or overtime. Granato, given some additional shifts because of Todd Harvey's head injury suffered early in the first period, ended a 12-game goal-less streak to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead at 6:01 of the third period.
